Chapter Seven
Fury
For the first time in his life, Fury felt complete. The longing and aching of missing something had completely disappeared. The void that had been there was now filled with warmth and a sense that a piece of Cinder was inside him. He didn’t know any other way of explaining it.
But what was most startling of all was the fact that somehow Cinder and he revived Pele even after her last ember vanished. He knew they didn’t bring her back from the dead, because her essence was still there but still, they shouldn’t have been able to do that.
However he squashed his worry, because he could now sense how happy Cinder was to have her loyal guard and friend safe and sound. He’d do it all over again just for Cinder and how much it meant to her.
As Pele spread her wings out above them all, her dark blue flames were longer than ever. Somehow they did that, and boy that might come in handy again.
“How is that possible?” The older lady’s voice shook and her eyes widened. “I’ve never heard of such.”
Neither had he, but it probably would be best if he kept that to himself.
“It doesn’t matter how, but that they did.” The strange black phoenix said as a smile graced his rugged face.
If Fury didn’t know any better, he’d think that Pele had found her mate, but that couldn’t be possible. After all, their colors were different from them.
Pele began to flap her wings slower as she lowered to the ground. The closer she got, the more evident the various shades of dark blue woven through her wings were. It was almost mesmerizing.
I can’t believe we did that. Cinder’s voice was like music to him.
Fury never thought he’d find his mate, and when he did, he didn’t think she’d ever connect with him. So to be with her like this was beyond special. But he couldn’t keep the doubts from intruding. After all, it took her friend almost dying for her to allow it. Was it a moment of weakness? Would she regret it tomorrow?
Concern laced her words. Are you okay? She turned away from her friend and looked straight at him.
No, he wouldn’t worry her. Right now she should be celebrating her friend’s survival. Either way, she was his and that’s what he had to focus on. No, I’m fine. Just still trying to process it all.
She arched an eyebrow and stared at him for a second. She laid her head on his arm and sighed. Right now, we’re going to pretend that’s true, but when things settle you better tell me the truth.
Damn, she already knew him too well. Unable to resist, he wrapped an arm around her and pulled her closer. His body was beginning to burn and it wasn’t because of his phoenix.
Her eyes glowed and that was almost his undoing.
“Oh thank gods.” Pele ran toward them and tackled them with a hug. “I don’t know how you did it, but thank you.
